They have known each other almost all their lives: same school, a small village, common surrounding.

Yulia is 24, Vlad is 29, they have been together for almost 6 years and a few weeks ago the got married. They come from Luhansk region, now their village is under occupation. This story is not about disability or trauma, it is rather about love, thanks to which everything can be overcome.

When we met Yulia and Vlad for the first time, we were impressed by their posture: open, courageous, sincere. Vlad is a military man — in 2014 he went to the ATO zone. One day off of his vacation in 2016 turned his life upside down. Vlad suffered a spinal injury, so since then his legs have been substituted by a wheelchair. Julia, his wife, helps him in everything – she is such a reliable strong support, despite her fragility.

On February 24, they woke up from mom’s call, “‘Take the documents and the most important things, pack your bags,'” mom said, I thought she was joking. Being sleepy, we didn’t understand what she was talking about. It turned out that it was not a joke – the war began,” Yulia shares her memories.

Their village was occupied in 3 days. The couple was thinking what to do for a long time. How would they get away? Would Russian soldiers let them go? How to leave the village in a wheelchair? And they were also worried, because Vlad was a military man in the recent past, albeit in a wheelchair, but this fact never stopped Russian occupants. For some time they were looking for a carrier, monitored the directions which were available for leaving. The driver, who agreed to help, went through eight enemy checkpoints, and at one of them the Russian military pointed weapons at them and said that they (Yulia and Vlad) would not go further.

“It is difficult to resist when you see armed people in front of you, so we decided to move on our own. We said goodbye to the driver and, together with more than a hundred people, moved to the territory controlled by Ukraine. We were supported by these people, they carried our things, then they helped гі with the wheelchair”, Yulia shares their story.

“We understood that we needed to wait just a little bit more to see Ukrainian militaries, and to be among Ukrainian people. Just a little bit more time… So we got to Kharkiv, then – to Lviv. Thanks to Group for Active Rehabilitation, we live in the Hetman Hotel, which allowed us to stay as long as necessary – there are wonderful people here,” says Vlad.

Here in Lviv, they decided to get married, as all these trials only strengthened their relationship. They share their plans very briefly: they are now going abroad, where Vlad will still undergo additional examination, which he needs after spinal surgery, due to discomfort in the area of injury. They perceive all these wanderings as a honeymoon and they dream to return to their village in the nearest future. Yulia says that she has always wanted to develop and invest in her homeland, she likes to be engaged into agriculture, farming, because this type of work inspires her. Vlad dreams of working in IT, and he is sure that with a strong internet connection he can work from native Luhansk region. So his goal is to provide fellow villagers with internet. It will give a lot of opportunities for study and development, which he did not have himself before. Yulia and Vlad both dream of Ukraine’s victory in this war, as do millions of Ukrainians.

We wish the newlyweds long and happy years of life, may their dreams come true as soon as possible.
