About us

The active rehabilitation movement dates back to 1992 in Ukraine, but the official status of a legal entity was registered in 2008. Since then, the UKRAINIAN ASSOCIATION OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES «GROUP FOR ACTIVE REHABILITATION» has continued its classic volunteer activities to implement the Active Rehabilitation Camps programme and projects aimed at improving the quality of life of people with spinal cord injuries and similar diseases.

Every one of those injuries is a person who has a few weeks to learn to live anew: to move, to take care of themselves, to return to work and to their family. A hospital restores health, but it does not restore life in the community.

We are the bridge between the hospital bed and ordinary life at home: our instructors work in the hospital alongside the medical team, and afterwards, when a person comes back home.

Our mission is to motivate people with spinal cord injuries to maximise their independence through systematic training and self-improvement using active rehabilitation tools, knowledge and understanding of their own capabilities.

What we do

We conduct active rehabilitation camps Ten days in which a person after an injury learns to handle a wheelchair, take care of themselves and get past steps and kerbs. The teaching is done by instructors who live with the same injury. More details

We are implementing the First Contact programme An instructor comes to the person in the first weeks after the injury — in hospital or at a rehabilitation centre, alongside the facility's team. It is often the first conversation after which fear turns into a plan. More details

Creating a barrier-free space We audit the accessibility of buildings, spaces and services using an international methodology, and train staff. Not a list of complaints but a plan of changes with measurements and priorities. More details

Supporting our loved ones Families often do not know where to help and where to step back: over-protection slows the return to independence just as much as a lack of support. We advise relatives as much as the person themselves. More details

Breaking stereotypes and changing public perception We talk about life after an injury without heroism or pity — in the media, at conferences and through our participants' own stories. Because half the barriers are in people's heads, not in architecture. More details

We shape public policy We work with public authorities on accessibility and rehabilitation standards and bring international models into Ukrainian practice — from personal assistance to accessibility audits. More details

Philosophy of active rehabilitation

The active rehabilitation methodology sets us apart both from medical institutions and from other organisations. It rests on five principles.

01 Role models The teacher is someone who lives with a spinal cord injury themselves: they know its consequences, they know what is possible, and they can pass that on. Their own way of life is the proof.
02 Focus on opportunities We talk not about what has been lost, but about what remains — and about the choice of how to use it.
03 Environment Life happens in an ordinary environment that nobody adapts in advance. Barriers — physical and inner — are no reason to stop: you take them into account and reduce their effect.
04 Physical exercises Without physical fitness there is no independence: the strength of your arms and your endurance decide whether you manage without help. Exercise also affects mental health.
05 Psychological support Accepting a new condition is a process. We create a space where a person gets to know themselves alongside those who have been through the same, and finds the motivation to move on.

«Перший контакт» усередині державних лікарень

Інструктори з власним досвідом травми працюють у лікарнях поруч із медиками — там, де людина вперше дізнається, що життя триває.

Навчання медичного персоналу

Семінари й вебінари для лікарів, фізичних терапевтів, ерготерапевтів і медсестер: сучасне розуміння інвалідності замість застарілої медичної моделі.

Міжнародні стандарти в українській практиці

Норвегія, Швеція, Польща, Латвія — наші лідери привозять не вправи, а цілі системи: від персональної допомоги до аудиту доступності.

Історія руху

Активна реабілітація прийшла в Україну як волонтерський рух — задовго до того, як з’явилася організація.

1991

The first camp

From 28 March to 10 April the first active rehabilitation camp is held in Saky: a team from the Swedish organisation Rekryteringsgruppen and 14 participants from six republics.

1992

The movement reaches Ukraine

The first Ukrainian camp in Vynnyky, Lviv region. By 2003 there will be fourteen of them, funded by sponsors and city budgets.

1996

Wheelchairs of our own

Ukraine begins producing its first active-type wheelchairs, on the initiative of former camp participants and instructors.

2004

First Contact and state support

The international First Contact seminar in Yevpatoria. From then on the work in hospitals is carried by people who take the initiative — still without a system or funding. The camps receive state support for the first time.

2008

Official registration

In May the volunteer movement becomes a civil society organisation. In the same year seminars for medical staff begin.

2014

Losing the base, moving west

After the occupation of Crimea the camps lose the Paralympic base in Yevpatoria. The programme is restored in the Lviv region.

2022

The war changes the scale

Evacuating people we support, housing and transport for the displaced, and later the first wounded servicemen with spinal cord injuries.

2023

First Contact becomes a system

What individual enthusiasts had carried for twenty years becomes a programme: training, agreements with hospitals, records — and an instructor comes to a person in the first weeks after the injury.

2026

Today

Camps, remote counselling, accessibility audits, training for medical staff and work on national barrier-free policy.
