About us

The active rehabilitation movement dates back to 1992 in Ukraine, but the official status of a legal entity was registered in 2008. Since then, the UKRAINIAN ASSOCIATION OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES «GROUP FOR ACTIVE REHABILITATION» has continued its classic volunteer activities to implement the Active Rehabilitation Camps programme and projects aimed at improving the quality of life of people with spinal cord injuries and similar diseases.

History of the movement
Our mission is to motivate people with spinal cord injuries to maximise their independence through systematic training and self-improvement using active rehabilitation tools, knowledge and understanding of their own capabilities.
Our values
Equality
Independence
Solidarity
Philosophy of active rehabilitation
The philosophy or methodology of active rehabilitation is unique and distinguishes us from both medical and other organisations and associations. It is the fundamental basis and starting point for all activities and is based on five main principles:
01
Role models
A leader is a person who has lived with a spinal cord injury or a similar condition, has in-depth information about the consequences of the injury and further opportunities, is able to pass on this knowledge in a pedagogical way and sets a good example by his or her lifestyle.
02
Focus on opportunities
We do not focus on existing limitations, but rather on opportunities and the search for potential, encouraging people to make an active choice about how to use it.
03
Environment
Our lives and activities take place in an ordinary, unprepared environment that cannot be controlled and we need to be prepared for it in order to participate actively in it. The presence of physical and mental barriers should not stop us, but should be taken into account and we should try to reduce their impact.
04
Physical exercises
Physical fitness is a prerequisite for taking advantage of all opportunities and developing independence in everyday life. They have a positive impact on quality of life and improve mental health. A leader is a person who has first-hand experience of living with a spinal cord injury or similar condition, has in-depth information about the effects of the injury and future possibilities, is able to pass on this knowledge in a pedagogical way and sets a good example by his or her lifestyle.
05
Psychological support
A person after a trauma goes through a process of mental perception. We work with the thought process through various meetings where a person can get to know themselves and feel comfortable. At these meetings, they are given the tools and motivation to further develop their independence and understanding of the possibilities for their future life.
What are we doing?
We conduct active rehabilitation camps
One of the most effective methods of restoring a person's physical and social condition after a spinal cord injury. A ten-day intensive course for people who use a wheelchair to improve their self-care skills, master the use of an active wheelchair and overcome architectural obstacles, understand their condition and prevent complications.

We are implementing the First Contact programme
The first contact with active rehabilitation instructors is an important moment for a person with a spinal cord injury who is in a medical institution or rehabilitation centre. The aim of the programme is to identify a person after an injury as quickly as possible and provide them with comprehensive support, motivation to exercise and an active lifestyle.

Creating a barrier-free space
We conduct accessibility audits in cities, medical facilities, public spaces and transport infrastructure. We provide recommendations for their improvement and cooperate with government agencies, businesses and communities to make the world around us more accessible to everyone.

Supporting our loved ones
We involve families and loved ones in the rehabilitation process, as quality support at an early stage contributes to better adaptation. We provide the necessary information about life after injury.

Breaking stereotypes and changing public perception
We conduct information campaigns, speak at conferences, organise events and cooperate with the media to show that people with spinal cord injuries can be active, independent and fulfilled in society. We promote the idea of equal opportunities and prove that barrier-free accessibility is a benefit for everyone.

Volunteering at camp is not a way of life, it is life!
I first took part in active rehabilitation camp in 2007, when I was only 18.

Активна реабілітація допомагає подолати внутрішні бар'єри
>Я була лише на одному таборі активної реабілітації в 2013 році, але я чітко відчула, що всі дії інструкторів та волонтерів спрямовані, насамперед, на подолання страхів учасників...

Active rehabilitation helps to overcome internal obstacles
I only participated in one camp in 2013, but I felt clearly that most actions of instructors and volunteers aimed primarily at helping participants to overcome their fears.

Після «активних» таборів я став більше цінувати життя
Табори активної реабілітації стали досить повчальним уроком в моєму житті. Там я знайшов багатьох друзів, а головне - в мене змінились деякі погляди на життя.
